The history of Ecuador is a history that dates back 3000 years b.c. From then until the arrival of the spaniards to South America can be considered the first phase, and the second goes from the Discovery of America until it's independence, and finally from it's indepence to now.

Las Vegas, the penninsula of Santa Elena and Quito were the first settlements that are known in Equador. Some date back more than 9,000 years b.c. like the case of El Inga. From it's beginings, the aborigines were in this region. Atacames, Mantas and Yungas were some of them. They lived off agriculture, fishing, livestock..and in our era the Incas, Tupac, Huayna's and the Yupanqui's made this there territory.

After the aborigine era and the Inca era's, the spaniards came. This happend in the 16th century in the year 1534 when Francisco Pizarro conquered the area, anexing it to the viceroyalty of Peru. In the end of the 16th century this area was still under the spaniard ruling.

During the next years and centuries, Equador, and what we know today was ruled by the kingdom of Granada, it was an era of Spanish contro, cultural development as well as political and artistic. All of this until the 19th century when the first rebellions occured that caused the Independence of Ecuador.

In the beginings of the 19th century, mainly in the year 1809 came the first problems came with the rebellion of the criolles and second with the Independence of Quito on the 10th of August which during the same year failed.

Afterwards in the year 1822 the Pichincha Battle arrived with troops under the orders of Simon Bolivar that gained an important victory in this region with Ecuadors good interests at hear. Ecuador became part of the great Columbia. Ecuador was the District of the south of Columbia.

The Independence of spain caused this country to turn into a Republic and with it came the feuds between the liberals and conservatives. Disputes that cause the great conservative Gabriel Garcia Moreno to impose a dictatorship that lasted 15 years until the year 1875. It was definately one of the darkest eras for this country. It finally ended with a liberal revolution 20 years after in 1875 with the murder of the dictator.

In 1895 came the liberal era. They kicked out the heads of the churches of the country for being the instigators of the dictatorship era. Liberalism was implemented. In the 20th century the liberal maintained power during the first years until a separation was made between church and state.

In the 20th century in the year 1920 with the liberals in power the country suffered a great economical crisis, a collateral damage from WWI that has spared Europe. Labor forces in 1922 produced a revolt in Guayaquil with a result of 1000 people dead. It was an era of instabillity whose biggest result was the war against Peru in 1941 and the loss of terrain in the amazon jungle in favor of the Peruvians.

In the second half of the 20th century chaos governed Ecuador, a dictatorship that had onced again gained power in this country and caused it's failure. Nonetheless it was a time for Ecuador to start taking advantage of it's natural resources, like the creation of the CEPE The State Oil Corporation of Equador which allowed this country to enter the OPEP.

At the end of the 70's it began to regain a constitutional system, and from then on it has been a balancing of conservative, democratic and liberal presidents that have taken office.
