The Galapagos Islands in Ecuador, South America is an archipelago that is about 950kms from the main penninsula in the Pacific Ocean. They have a mild climate, tropical and with temperatures that average from 23-34 degrees celcius all year round. These islands are where Charles Darwin did his studies about evolution. They are famous worldwide for it's flora and fauna and galapagos turtles. It is a protected space that is very interesting in every aspect. The Galapagos Islands are one of the major treasures that we find in the Pacific Ocean and are part of the world heritage declared so by the UNESCO. They are also known as the Archipelago of Colon and it's capital is Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. They are a total of 19 islands with hundreds of tiny ones where life has a special dimension. Tourism is one of the main sources of income in Ecuador, where these enchanting islands are located.
These islands are known in the world because of Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution studies here. San Cristobal, Santa Cruz, Genovesa, Wolf, Floreana, Baltra, Pinzon, Darwin, Isabela or Fernandina are just some of the island located in the archipelago. Santa Cruz, Isabela and San Cristbal are the main attraction islands.
They belong to Equador since 1832, year in which Ecuador anexed them.
Puerto Ayola, in the island of Santa Cruz is the most populated city in the achipelago, while Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is the second most important city with a population of about 6000 inhabitants.
San Cristobal, Isabela, and Santa Cruz are the three inhabited islands in the Galapagos. |
